If I Were to Pick a Mental Illness to Describe New Yorkers, Depression Wouldn’t Be It
Speaking as a native New Yorker, I think this study is seriously flawed. Depression? Really? Sure – everyone is more depressed since Bill DiBlasio decided to singlehandedly dismantle the city brick by corrupt brick. But frankly, the mental illnesses I know to be more prevalent run the gamut from simple anger management issues to outright hostility and aggression. Not passive-aggression, mind you – the New Yorkers I know and love practice good old-fashioned in-your-face, scare your pants off variety of aggression. And that’s not necessarily a pathological response to living in New York – it’s more of an evolutionary, Darwinistic, fight-or-flight response originating in that reptilian part of your brain that never really actually fully evolved. That’s what it means to be a New Yorker.
