The United States uses 80% of the world”s narcotics. That’s right – 80% of all the narcotics produced in the world are diverted to America. You have heard all the stories – they are all true. People die every day from prescription drug overdose and doctors have to eat some of that blame. Doctors waaayyyyy overprescribe Vicodin and Percocet and Oxycodone and Valium and Xanax – you name it. The dirty little secret is that doctors are terrified NOT to prescribe narcotics because they know that if the patient files a complaint or leaves a negative review, suddenly the doctor is explaining him (or her) self to an administrator or bureaucrat as to why the patient satisfaction scores are dropping. The doctor might even lose his or her job. The truth doesn’t matter anymore – doing the right thing for the patient doesn’t matter anymore. The only thing that matters is patient satisfaction and keeping the money rolling in. It’s a shame but its the truth. A lot of these indiscriminately prescribed narcotics are winding up in high schools and even middle schools and the addiction epidemic will not go away. That’s a fact.
