Breakfast of Champions

Breakfast of Champions

This is a new one – two teenagers are dead and several injured in Tennessee after they drank a combination of “racing fuel” (whatever that is) and Mountain Dew. A quick internet search of “racing fuel” delivers several options including leaded gasoline (which shouldn’t cause death, unless aspirated into the lungs) and methanol-containing fuel (which will absolutely kill you if you drink it) among other things. The other thing that is inconsistent with whats being reported is that the Vanderbilt toxicologists are referring to this racing fuel + Mountain Dew as “Dewshine” but there is an actual product called “Dewshine” made by the same folks that make Mountain Dew (PepsiCO). Not the first time the newspaper would get a detail like this wrong. Between the guy that tried to poison his wife’s toothpaste and these kids getting sick and dying from Dewshine, not a great week for Tennessee. Maybe they should call it “Douche-ine.” I have a call out to the Vanderbilt tox people for some clarification.
